Yordas Group supports IAEG with industry declarable substances list

The Challenge

We helped the client standardise processes and develop chemical reporting tools to manage risk for the aerospace and defence industry.

Project results

  1. Reducing the burden placed on supply chains for chemical reporting

  2. Ensuring business continuity ahead of updates to legislation

  3. Identifying regulatory and compliance issues more quickly

The Client

The International Aerospace Environmental Group (IAEG®) is a trade association of global aerospace and defence (AD) companies, formed to collaborate on and share innovative environmental solutions for the industry and its supply chain. The group works to drive continual improvement in the processes used by the industry, thereby delivering consistently high quality products and regulatory compliance with reduced environmental impacts.

The Challenge: Reducing risk to the Aerospace and Defence Industry

There is a significant risk to the AD industry supply chain with respect to substances used and related regulation, and as a result, IAEG® is working towards the development of a standardised process and tools that can be used for chemical reporting across the industry. The industry and supply chain may capture efficiencies through the creation and maintenance of a baseline list of substances of concern, based on global chemical regulations, and as a result, Yordas Group was contracted by IAEG® to develop and maintain a declarable substances list (AD-DSL).

The AD-DSL was developed through a series of distinct stages in order to identify substances with known risks, however remove substances which are not in scope. The first stage identified a global list of substance regulations affecting the AD industry and thus a master list of substances with known risks. A series of vetting processes enabled the exclusion of substances which did not meet the regulatory criteria, for example substances restricted exclusively in consumer products.

A final stage of vetting was then required to exclude substances which are not relied on in AD industry products or in related processes (for example facility-only chemicals), and (based on available information) in the AD supply chain. This was achieved through a member declaration process, indicating substances common to the AD industry, and enabling members to determine whether the hazardous substance they use is a widespread risk for several members or whether the risk solely applies to them.

Working to achieve data commonality through the AD supply chain

This resulted in a final AD-DSL, potentially reducing the burden placed on supply chains for chemical reporting and ensuring substance regulatory compliance issues can be identified and managed by using AD companies more effectively. Staying ahead of legislation on substances of concern enables you to move quickly and adapt your products, ensuring business continuity. Yordas Group can prepare and maintain Restricted and Declarable Substances Lists tailored for your company, flagging substances which are of concern in your industry and require immediate removal or gradual phasing out from your supply chain, as well as alerting you to proposed and upcoming changes.
