GRMS²: Regulatory radar for the automotive industry

New decade, new challenges

Mobility as a Service, Brexit, falling demand from China, air quality issues, electrified vehicles and batteries, COVID-19 and autonomous vehicles – the new decade certainly offers a lot of challenges and winds of change for the automotive industry. While both products and production processes are getting more complex, legal requirements are also getting stricter in areas such as fuel efficiency, exhaust emissions, product safety, noise and chemicals. The challenge of environmental compliance means increasingly rigorous legislation, regulations and standards for the automotive industry.

At Yordas we are the leading provider of early warning systems for the automotive industry, functioning as a custom software tool and database developer, regulatory radar and partner for the biggest names in the industry: from Hyundai and Volkswagen to Honda and Jaguar Land Rover.

One of our latest projects involved helping ACEA (the European Automobile Manufacturers Association), which represents Europe’s car, van, truck and bus manufacturers. ACEA works with a variety of institutional, non-governmental, research, and civil society partners as well as with a number of industry associations to ensure the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the automobile industry.

Together with ACEA, we identified the need for designing a chemical regulation tool that can inform automotive companies in advance of requirements being put in place, enabling the sector to make timely decisions regarding compliance. This meant that the scope of the tool must cover updates to existing legislation in addition to new legislation in the draft or pre-draft stage.

Our solution

Yordas was contracted to develop, populate and maintain the GRMS² (Global Regulatory Monitoring System of Chemical Substances) tool on behalf of ACEA. Our industry-focused GRMS² solution covers the majority of chemical regulatory management needs for the automotive industry, including global regulatory impact assessments for the sector. In this project we were able to combine our extensive regulatory knowledge with our software development capabilities, and make use of the chemical substance data and updates from our in-house database Yordas Hive.

GRMS² contains hundreds of fact sheets. Scripted by experts at Yordas Group, these provide key information on new and existing global legislation impacting the automotive sector, including their impact on the manufacture, import, and after-sales of both articles and process chemicals.

Key features of GRMS²

  • Chemicals legislation is assessed by Yordas' experts for relevance to the automotive industry (articles/spare parts and/or process chemicals), including listed substances that are checked for matches with the automotive-related IMDS Basic Substances List (BSL) and the ACEA Process Chemicals List (PCL)

  • Users are able to take full advantage of knowledge sharing in the industry and submit content to the fact sheets

  • Substance-related updates are provided through integration of Notifications from the Yordas Hive software tool

Benefits for the client

OEMs and suppliers in the automotive industry can now be alerted to new legislation while it is still at the draft stage, and evaluate how it might potentially impact their business. Users have information on chemical regulations relevant to their business at their fingertips, and can opt in to receive email alerts when changes to regulations occur or new regulations are published, to help ensure compliance.
