Materials Obsolescence Management Plan for BAE Systems
The Client
BAE Systems, a leading maritime manufacturer, produces various product ranges for the naval industry as well as developing new technologies across a number of sectors to meet the demand and requirements of the defence industry. Many businesses of this type rely on a number of highly specialised chemical formulations in order to manufacture their finished products. With extremely long and onerous approval cycles for products and components, their supply chains have a high potential of being severely impacted by obsolescence. Yordas Hive’s functionality provides our client with the advantage of managing their materials obsolescence company-wide to address both current and upcoming chemicals legislation.
Reducing Business Risk due to Obsolescence
Obsolescence occurs when materials specified in the design stage, or procured in the manufacturing stage, cease to be available on the market. This may be because a chemical substance becomes banned or restricted, or simply because suppliers no longer support a substance due to the prohibitive cost of compliance. Where the substance in question is critical for material performance, the result is that any products relying on it can no longer be manufactured, or can no longer adhere to strict approval criteria. To mitigate against this risk, BAE Systems has developed a materials obsolescence management plan. The client produced a system that allows them to categorise those substances and products which are most likely to be affected by obsolescence issues.
Yordas Hive helps maintain visibility of high risk products
Using Yordas Hive, BAE Systems has been able to take advantage of our information-rich database to determine the obsolescence risk of their substances. The Hive Notifier tool further allows the client to maintain risk status by monitoring changes in relevant regulations.
The Yordas Hive software allows BAE to customise their own compliance database and upload their Bill of Materials and chemical constituent information in order to maintain visibility of high-risk products. In turn, this enables the client to prioritise any required action to mitigate against obsolescence and keep track of the impact of regulatory changes on their products. As a result, BAE Systems saves considerable time and effort, while being reassured that they are getting the most current information about regulatory changes that affect their products, both now and in the future.
