Meet Your Trainer: Cathrin Cailliau

Cathrin Cailliau, Science Communication Specialist and Project Manager at Yordas

What is your background and what qualifications do you hold?

I'm a Science Communication specialist and project manager. I have a background in both sustainability research and science communication, having previously worked at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and the Nuremberg Institute of Technology. I hold an M.Sc. in Global Change Ecology and a B.A. in English/American Studies and Geography.

What do you do at Yordas?

At Yordas, I wear two hats. I support the sustainability team with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) courses. In my other role, I lead communication and dissemination efforts for two Horizon Europe research projects, ensuring the impactful findings of these projects reach the wider world.

How does your current role connect with your background?

My background in both natural science and humanities (English Studies) uniquely positions me to bridge the gap between complex scientific research and effective public understanding. This is crucial in my current role at Yordas, where I communicate research findings and knowledge on corporate social responsibility.

What have you learned at Yordas?

At Yordas, I've gained valuable experience in managing large-scale research projects, collaborating internationally, and understanding the real-world application of sustainability concepts, particularly through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This has significantly broadened my knowledge of the sustainability landscape.

How did you get started with Yordas?

I was looking for a role that combined science communication with sustainability. When I saw the opening at Yordas, it seemed like a great fit!

As a Science Communication specialist, I’m passionate about making complex information accessible.

Who/what inspired you to pursue a career in science?

Let's say geography wasn't my first choice for a minor. But then I fell in love with physical geography, and that led me to study ecology and climatology. So, you could say it all started with a happy accident, but truth be told, I've always been a huge nature fan.

What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?

When I'm not managing projects, you'll find me travelling, picking up new languages, getting lost in nature reads, capturing the world through my lens, tending to my garden, or dancing!

What do you enjoy most with training?

As a Science Communication specialist, I'm passionate about making complex information accessible. I bring this passion to my training roles to create engaging learning experiences that make learning enjoyable. Seeing participants grasp new concepts and apply their knowledge is very rewarding and aligns with my own commitment to a growth mindset as the base of continuous learning and professional development.
