GHS Revision 9: What’s changed?

Read Time:1 minute

Created to address the classification of chemicals by types of hazards, the GHS aims to provide a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at a national, regional and worldwide level. Implemented in many countries (via their legislation) the GHS is a regulatory necessity for the safe use, importing and exporting of hazardous chemicals worldwide.

Since 2003, the GHS has been revised nine times, with the most recent edition published on September 14th, 2021. The ninth revised edition of the GHS contains a number of amendments as well as newly added content and guidance relating to the classification and labelling of chemical substances and mixtures.

These include:

  1. Revised criteria for categorization of flammable gases within Category 1

  2. Miscellaneous amendments intended to clarify the definitions of some health hazard classes

  3. Additional guidance to extend the coverage of section 14 of the Safety Data Sheets to all bulk cargoes, regardless of their physical state, transported under IMO instruments

  4. Revised and further rationalized precautionary statements in Annex 3, and a new example in Annex 7 addressing labelling of small packagings with fold-out labels.
