GHS implementation status in South Africa and other African nations

  • Yordas Group Lancaster Environment Centre LA1 4YQ United Kingdom (map)

GHS is a global initiative that promotes effective hazard classification and communication. Currently, only 3 out of the 54 African countries have implemented the GHS system, with South Africa being the most recent nation. In 2021, South Africa’s Minister of the Department of Employment & Labour published the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents 2021 (RHCA), which repeals the previous Hazardous Chemical Substances Regulations of 1995. The RHCA aligns with GHS revision 8 and is only mandatory for the industrial sector from September 2022. Several other African nations are also in the process of implementing GHS including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Rwanda. The aim of this webinar is to discuss the current GHS regulatory landscape in Africa, challenges with implementation and upcoming deadlines.

The webinar will cover

  • GHS implementation in force in South Africa, Zambia and Mauritius.

  • Status of GHS implementation in Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Rwanda and other African countries.

  • Challenges with implementation and enforcement.

The webinar will benefit

  • Companies placing chemical products on the market, in Africa.

  • Global regulatory professionals from companies having activities in Africa.

  • Any regulatory professional working closely with the GHS and SDSs
