Yordas Brings Together International Experts on NanoSafety: the NanoSafety Training School 2022

Towards Safe and Sustainable by Design Advanced (Nano)Materials

In May of this year, Yordas co-organised the Nanosafety Training School in Venice, Italy. This event brought together almost 120 international scientists from the European Nanosafety Cluster (NSC) to discuss moving towards the EU’s priority of Safe and Sustainable by Design under the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability, as it applies to advanced nanomaterials. Participants met for 22 educational sessions covering a variety of current nanosafety research.

Knowledge on nanomaterials gained over the past two decades is now influencing emerging research in a variety of fields, such as advanced materials, nanomedicine, microplastics and sustainable chemistry. Companies using nanomaterials will be particularly concerned with the approach of regulators to grouping and assessment of these materials. Presentations covered such topics as similarity assessment and alternatives to testing (NAMs) –--e.g., read-across approaches, risk assessment and management, risk governance or FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data management and data quality assessment. Enabling knowledge exchange is essential to align research findings from various projects and foster collaboration.

Yordas is the work package leader for dissemination and communication in the EU projects SUNSHINE and CHARISMA, and a core work package member in SbD4Nano, paired with involvement in scientific work packages related to regulatory affairs.
